Satya

One of the 5 Yama (social ethics) set forth in the Eightfold Path of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, Satya implores us to speak truthfully. Are we truthful to others? Are we honest with ourselves?

Lies and untruths distract, create cognitive dissonance and obstruct our path toward achieving a clear mental state needed for more easeful meditation.

Yoga does not take a truth-at-all-costs approach. Intent matters, and here, another one of the Yama comes into play: Ahimsa, or non-harming. Are we causing harm in our insistence to relay the truth? Does it improve the silence?

Perhaps there’s another way to communicate. A good rule of thumb may be to speak one's truth from the heart instead of the head. This is why we often work on cultivating an awareness of our heart center. Learning to readily access the anahata will take some practice, but worth the spiritual gifts it endows the practitioner.
